Bluefin Fish Sells for Unprecedented Price of 3.2 million dollars at Tokyo Auction
A bulky bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the new year.
The top bid for the 535-pound fish was submitted by the operator of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which runs restaurants across the country and abroad.
"The first tuna signals good luck," commented the business owner, a notable figure at the yearly January sale.
Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is famous for placing record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile January auctions.
Bidding Shock and Historic Past
After the auction, the winner told the press that he was "taken aback at the amount," stating, "I believed we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price escalated before you knew it."
This most recent purchase exceeds his previous historic purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Despite previously saying that he thought he "overdid it," he has now proceeded to shatter his personal record another time.
A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is typically associated with exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by a different food company, which indicated the fish would be served at its eateries across Japan.
The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a major spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
From Auction to Plate
The extremely valuable tuna was promptly processed for diners at the bidder's sushi chains immediately after the auction was finished.
"I feel like I've begun the year in a good way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year begins," remarked one happy customer.
