The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Tropical Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by American Private Equity Firm.
An iconic tropical holiday destination situated on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has built in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending customary regulatory approvals.
The family released a statement saying they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is developed, including a substantial array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.

Blackstone has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
